Think you’ll find a job sitting alone in your dorm room Oct. 11-13? Think again. Make plans now to attend this year’s Society for News Design Annual Workshop in Boston. The first day is for students only and it’s all geared toward giving you the tools you need to get to the next level. Whether you need ideas on your school publication, your portfolio or the job hunt, we’ve assembled designers from print and online who’ll give you hands-on, practical advice and inspiration. You’ll kick yourself if you don’t go. But the Workshop is going to kick even more.

Get your portfolio critiqued in small groups by designers and SND judges from award-winning newspapers. This a great opportunity to get feedback from some of the best in the business.

Visual journalism is about much more than print. Learn about taking your newspaper or magazine online, building interactive graphics and photo galleries. Jared Novack, award-winning former designer of the Syracuse Daily Orange and interactive designer at the Houston Chronicle, shares strategies and practical tips on everything from building templates to picking the right software.

Build your brainstorming skills

Learn how to take a tricky concept or tough assignment and spin it around to unlock a creative solution. See examples of great pages done on tight budgets from sketch to completion.

FREE RIDE

Apply for an SND Student Member Travel Grant. Each year a number of SND student members receive $200 (U.S. students) or $500 (international students) to help offset the cost of attending the Workshop. Applications can be downloaded at www.snd.org/pdf/student_travel_grant_form.pdf

Spend your summer by the beach at Poynter

Come to Thursday’s Student Session to compete for the chance to win one of three Summer Fellowships for Young Journalists offered by The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Fla. The six-week intensive program gathers the best young talent from around the world. You’ll work with aspiring and accomplished journalists to refine your skills to become a better visual journalist.
